Jose Rizal: Reformist, Writer & Patriot

8:00 AM

(this is an old work of the blogger for the Philippine National Hero)

To defend things as we see it fit during perilous times is a one-of-a-kind attitude that most people don’t possess. Rarely, to speak in behalf of a battered nation and protect it from harsh and false words in front of an enemy is already considered a suicidal act. But to a true patriot, the love for country can never be measured up to the extent where he’s willing to lay down his own life. And we, Filipinos are very privileged to have such fellow countryman, whose actions sparked the dormant nationalistic feelings of the people and enticed the nation to unite against the usurpers of our heritage, land and liberty.

The national hero of the Philippines can be boasted as a worldly-acclaimed nationalist figure especially in Southeast Asia. His actions and works were one of the first that advocated equality and liberty against the colonizers, whom most of Asia were subjected to then. Besides reading various texts regarding his life and work, we are presented a chance to have an overview of the hero’s life, his struggles and achievements, despite being what they called as in indio the movie Jose Rizal. Through the movie, we have learned new and many things about the famous hero.

Even as an indio and an ordinary citizen, Pepe (Rizal’s childhood name) showed extraordinary prowess on his studies since as a child, a talent that became the key to the fulfillment of the long war against subjugation, colonization and discrimination. He used his talents to fight for a cause, along his fellow compatriots, exposing the abuses of the Church and the inequality in the society propagated by the Spanish-dominated civil government.

Having the charisma using his pen, Jose Rizal managed to join in the struggle through the publication of his novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. Rizal exposed the abuses without a second thought. It was explicitly shown how the natives were maltreated by the civil officials and even Church officials, which were supposed to be comforters to the woes of the people as servants of God. Land grabbing, corruption, excessive taxes, inequality, rights deprivation, censorship of the press and inefficiency of the educational system are just some of the societal problems that Philippines experienced during those times and in which Rizal exposed to the eyes of the colonizers and to the whole world.

The effects of having a unified Church-State government were also shown wherein the Catholic hierarchy had leverage to influence the civil government’s affairs even up to the decision making of the governor-general. The heinous misdeeds of churchmen such as the selling of indulgencias and discriminating the native clergy and laymen alike were always given a justification by the civil government.

Although Rizal advocated for a free society, he never supported a national rebellion. His idea was a reform through education. Although his ideas may achieve its goals in the long run, the revolutionists didn’t and can’t wait for its fruition. Instead, the people took arms against the colonial regime and faults of the massive uprising were attributed to the man who never wanted rash actions resulting to the spillage of blood.

Rizal’s actions signified the call for change. The Filipinos were already full of the abuses and misdeeds of the Spaniards and they have seen a path of light and freedom through the person of Dr. Jose Rizal and his works. His achievements were a source of strength to the discriminated natives. He was a model that every revolutionist, nationalist and oppressed Filipino look upon. Rizal’s being an indio never became a hindrance for him to excel in his academic career, even disproving the Spaniards supposed superiority over the natives. He became a source of strength to the oppressed ones, giving justice to their situations by unraveling all their hardships and suffering under the foreigners.

Rizal is best exemplified through his huge sacrifices for the just cause of achieving freedom, even leaving his family and loved-ones behind, imprisoned without fault and sentenced to death though innocent. But his blood became the strength of the nation against the tyranny of the Spaniards. His sacrifice became the focal point, an inspiration to the Filipinos that ignited their passion resulting and achieving our freedom once more, called again a free man with a new nation. His novels became a symbol of the history that our countrymen had suffered through those times, and telling us that we were never half in the situation they were in before. A clear message that we should uphold our sovereignty, dignity and liberty with high regard as we came to acquaint with it through a high price: thousands of lives. And Rizal, he himself became a pillar in the foundation of our nation. His martyrdom sent a strong cohesive force that bounded every Filipino to stand up and unite against the outsiders who continuously pillaged our land.

Jose Rizal was never forgotten neither his work nor his sacrifices. His name became common to every household, known to everybody as a hero; a hero that sacrificed his life without regard of his own and without the thought of spilling an ounce of blood. Even though a century has passed, we still give our respect and adherence to his mighty contribution that shaped our today’s society. Rizal will always remain in the memory of every Filipino. A person like him may never come again; a reformist at work, a writer at mind and a patriot at heart.

My Inaugural Speech. 04.01.14

5:58 AM

I have always kept these words. My first speech during the KASAMA Presidency.

Oath Taking Ceremony with MSU-IIT Chancellor Dr. Sukarno D. Tanggol
~full speech~

To our ever dynamic Chancellor, Dr. Tanggol, the DSA Director, Dr. Banawa, CASS Dean Dr. Banawa, presidents of the different organizations, my parents and friends, the outgoing and new set of officers of the Kataastaasang Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral, good morning and Assalamo Alaykom Warakhmatullahi taala Wabarakatoh!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who are here with us today for gracing this event especially to Dr. Tanggol and the administration officials who gave time despite their busy schedules. Your presence is surely an affirmation to the great things that we will achieve together for the upcoming academic year. Many things may stand in our way but we should always remember that our ultimate goal is to provide service and proper representation to the studentry.

Being part of the new set of officers as the new president of the KASAMA in this period of time only means that despite the diversity in this Institute, the students indeed voted for leaders who are capable of the job that lies ahead. I know that difficult times may come in our way sooner but let us never forget the essence of true governance. True governance may only work so great when the leaders are united and are willing to set aside personal differences, all in the name of achieving the ultimate goal, which in our case are genuine leadership and efficient governance.

There are so much I wanna share today but I will let things unfold between all of us in our one year journey for the students. We must help each other, take care of each other and support one another. Let us always take into our minds that divisiveness has ultimately no room for this year.

To the outgoing officers who have been part of my journey, it was a great year indeed. Great year for sacrifices to reap victorious feats. Let me quote Senator Honey Baroman, "We were battered but never defeated." It was a challenging year ahead but despite the troubles, most of us still worked together. And never shall I allow deprivation again, for what is right should be kept right and what is wrong should be set right.

To the members of the Institute Legislative Body, my salute and gratitude to all of you! This part has come to an end but the experiences was more than rewarding. Thank you for standing by my leadership in the Senate and for never doubting.

To the outgoing college governors, thank you for your patience and still for endowing your trust on KASAMA despite whatever happened in the previous administration. Your continued support was a great help in letting the administration stand firmly still.

To the outgoing Cabinet, my gratitude for the services you've rendered. It was indeed a memorable partnership between us.

To the incoming officers, never shall we give up. We must fight harder, strive harder and work harder. There are no impossible things for a great and able person. And we shall achieve greater things this year.

And lastly to the Almighty Allah for giving me everything what I need in this journey of mine. A loving and supporting parents and family, competent workmates and a community which exists in unity amidst diversity.

This is Datu Esma Mikee P. Maruhom, the outgoing Senate President and your new President, always at your service. Wassalam!

The Bountiful and Royal Sulu Experience

5:57 AM

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that a point in my youth will experience an unimaginable trip down south of Mindanao. As a Maranao claiming to be of royal descent, it is a fulfilling feeling to visit the royal roots of Philippine royalty, no less than situated in the conflict-laden, beautiful island of Sulu.

Sulu is ruled once by the royal sultans until the American conquest. Like that of the Maranao and Maguindanao tribes, Sulu's royalty is existing still together with their traditional government but unrecognized by the RP government.

As a resident of Iligan City, traveling to Sulu is full of challenges. One is convincing family in granting permission for such travel. With the negative perception towards Sulu due to the arms conflict with the insurgents, the approval is one arduous process to undertake.

From Iligan, I together with my officials, traveled to Zamboanga City, the Asia's Latin City (due to the use of the bastardized Castilian language, Chavacano) which took a 12-hour overnight travel in a bus. Upon reaching Zamboanga, we immediately settled in a cheap hotel to freshen up and rest before buying our tickets to Sulu.

At past seven o' clock in the evening, our larger group including the delegates from MSU-General Santos and Sulu campuses joined us and boarded MV Beatrice, bound for Sulu. Honestly, I was quite shocked with the way how things are done on the ship. But what is life without a challenge.

It was a bumpy and slow boat ride to Sulu and the wind was so cold. It drizzled by midnight and we were covering ourselves on our beds. As what a colleague of mine said, the experience felt like being
injured soldiers on our way home from war.

Finally, I am so relieved seeing the pier of the mysterious Sulu. People got cranky due to the ship's slow stop and I am just glad that the Sulu students of MSU really assisted us. We were also greeted on the port by the MSU Sulu Dean of Agriculture, Dr. Arakama,

From the very first time I set foot in Sulu, I felt something new. The place is familiar with Muslim communities in the mainland Mindanao, and I immediately felt like at home. I paraded myself early morning around Jolo's center and Patikul. People are living normally and no gunshots heard, contrary to the biased facts that the media feeds us.

I was given a room in the MSU Sulu Guest House, with my colleagues in the Hostel. Though I insisted to be with them, but the landlady strictly forbid me to transfer as she took the liberty of playing host to me,

We toured around the campus and meet the school officials. Sulu is full of fresh air and the sunlight is rejuvenating. It is a tourist unexplored and uncharted territory. The natives are friendly and approachable contrary to reports that Tausugs are hostile to newcomers.

The island is a such a sight to see. People talk like Malaysians with their culture very much alike. Its a waste for tourists not to see the white beaches along the coastlines and islets. I can only say that I have only to Jolo, Patikul and Indanan and the municipalities between Jolo and Maimbung, but I really admired the simplicity of lifestyle.

One thing that I really enjoyed in Sulu was FOOD! Theirs are really superb! Seafood at its best. I went home gaining additional pounds. It only shows how bountiful Sulu is, both in land and in marine resources.

But what I will really treasure always are the memories that I have from the hospitality of the natives and of the students. I really did enjoy talking to them, sharing insights and ideas both academically and politically. Truly, wherever in the country, MSUans really are a bright flock of students. Most of us may be silent, but our minds and hearts are full of enthusiasm.

We must not always believe what we hear. Sulu is not bad as it seems. Sulu is a nice place to live in and I hope that the peace and order problem will be solved soon. We only need unity and everything else will follow. I want that Filipinos and tourists will come and visit Sulu without hesitation in the near future for it carries many mysteries, predating its royal history.

Tausugs are not hostile people. They are like us, calm and full of smiles. Normally, people become hostile when somebody aggravates us. Not only is that true for Tausugs but for all humans around the world.

I dare you to visit Sulu. Sulu will bring smiles and peace of mind (and a happy tummy).

Visit Sulu! Explore Sulu! Love Sulu! And to Sulu, magsukul!

Senators, thank you! Sanggibo salamat!

7:11 AM

It was a chance. An opportunity. But I never saw it becoming a blessing. Becoming a KASAMA Senator never did occur in my dreams when I first set foot in college. I always thought that my life in MSU-IIT will be all about me excelling in my academics. But I was wrong. My passion to serve was so hard to bury that eventually it came out from my closet.

I won't elaborate to you in this post on how did I become a student officer but rather let me share to my invisible readers how much I love, revere and respect my co-Senators in th government. Actually, I was holding myself earlier today for I am not yet ready to show myself crying in public. And this is all due to Nikka's influence that I am moved to make a post rathe similar to hers.

So. I humbly submit my emotions to my Senators on this post. I am starting through the ranks for me to remember everyone.

KASAMA Senators during the GAAP2013

JUSTINE CRIS BORROMEO. Even before I became a Senator, your name is already familiar in my mind. But then again, celebrities in campus like you were meant to be looked upon and I instilled unto my thoughts that you were one of the elites who will never mingle with simpletons like me. I was proved wrong. You are way beyond your face, literally. There is more to you than people can see. I am just thankful that I've known you and you are so brave and firm in making your decisions. You might be so busy doodling on your Engineering stuffs but you never failed to work as a Senator. Thank you for the strong foundation that you've provided me as I've steered the ILB all year long.

GEACHIN INNACENCE BADELLES. Whoa. It was never a secret of how things ended up the way they were. I wish there was a better way but we never had the chance to meet up in a common way. But still, thank you for the memories that you've shared with me. Your contribution was very valuable way then.

NIKKA RESTAURO. I didn't fathom that we will end up as a fictitious romantic pair in KASAMA. But nevertheless, let me clear to you that we are truly a pair, not romantically though. We know that our organizations paved the way for us to get closer to each other and I was never wrong in entrusting you my confidence and that you are truly a person who is up to the righteous fight that we continuously uphold. Thank you for helping me in making my decisions and supporting them all the way. I may not be the perfect person to become the ILB leader but you made me feel like it though. Your counsel proved to be so helpful that I wish that we discovered our tandem much earlier. I will never forget the things we've been through and I shan't say goodbye for our journey together shall never end in KASAMA.

HONEY MAE PRINCESS BAROMAN. Yo, mah men! Indeed, everything was one hell of a fight. Off all the Senators, we are the ones who are badly wounded by the loose cannon. But my friend, the fight still lingers on and my heart is just aching by how things are turning out by the minute. Still, the challenges are up ahead. I am just grateful that I never became the front liner alone and you were with me all the time, partners in crime. I just wish that our plans did work out but sadly, they all wasted away. Thank you for making me stand up and realize that everything was so wrong then. I consider you my pillar in this group for you are not only concerned about our welfare but you chose to exclude yourself in the way for us to be safely arriving on the endpoint. And let me reiterate it again, you never left us. Physically, yes, but you were still with us. Your fight is my fight, never forget that.

LOI MAGUSARA. The most bulldog-ish protector of the treasures in the office. For once, I thought that you were going to transform our office into a pastry shop but hey, you made it better by becoming an effective guardian. Never put into your mind that your tenure is a failure for you are absolutely wrong. Your strict qualities proved to be handy in your job and every plan of yours is truly remarkable except that there is a 50-50 chance that you will see them through. Let me take this oppurtunity to thank you for being so supportive, despite what my decisions are.

SIDRICK SARMIENTO. I can still say to myself that there are things that I need to know more about you. You still remain as a mysterious character sometimes but then again, I also know you for being a person that is dedicated and assertive when needed. I am just thankful that you remained strong despite the decisions you have come up to before in exchange of your preparations for the events. You risked everything to point out something that was so irrational and I give you credit for that. You may be moody sometimes but the Sidrick that will always remain in my mind is the boy who is firm and will never leave anyone behind.

KRISTELLE PANIAMOGAN. I think you are full of love, and I know you know what I mean by that. You are dedicated and I hope that attitude of yours will never change. Continue to soar high and give us spirits as we all step down in a month. We never had the chance to know each other more but I hope the later days will become a way to do that. Thank you also for supporting me in my leadership in the ILB.

ROSSEL JOYCE TAMPARON. My advisor. I always thought of you as a person who is straightforward and never ashamed to show her real feelings on different things. Thank you for being my light sometimes and for giving me words of encouragement and enlightenment. Thank you for bearing with my demands despite your hectic schedule. I know that you still want to patch things up but I think you know that I am not yet ready for that and I may never know when, as of now. Please stay as the Joyce I know, the Joyce that will always say things truthfully no matter how painful it is and the Joyce who will join you in the fight. Thank you for the meaningful advices.

KATHERINE MAE ONG. The beautiful gal of the KASAMA. I am just happy that KASAMA paved the way for us to know each other better despite the chances way back in high school. Your positive attitude is a contributing factor to the success of the KASAMA. You never showed me any animosity and sometimes I feel guilty if I've shown you some. Never make yourself useless for a people assess themselves poorly where in fact they've contributed greatly. Thank you for making KASAMA a positive environment after all.

VINCENT ECHAVEZ. I  envy you for your positive disposition always, for being the mood setter and for being a good advisor. You may never have shown your being an Ethics chair officially, but you are actually showing it whenever everyone needed it, in a casual way. Despite the differences we have in our parties, you never made me feel that I belong to another one. Thank you for the advises and the support you continuously give me. Thank you for always being there in the fights that we embarked to, and for not giving up, on me, on ILB. I'll always treasure the little boy with a beard of KASAMA.

JAMES ANTIQUINA. The techie and fashionista of KASAMA. Being with your company was somewhat new since your character is entirely new to me when we first met. Thank you for being a life, and by that I mean by making us feel light when we feel heavy and for supporting me and the body all the way. Your hugs are so comforting and thank you for giving them to me when I ask it of you. I shall never forget your laugh and again, thank you for making my life in KASAMA somewhat alive.

The one thing I regret with you guys is that I never got the chance to bond with you more. I was into more official matters that I forgot that I need to enjoy also. Thank you for supporting my shaky leadership and thank you for bearing with my demands. I may not be the perfect person to lead the group but I hope I didn't come out as a failure.

I shall never forget the memorable experiences.

Very yours truly,

DATU ESMA MIKEE PANTARAN MARUHOM. SENATE PREIDENT.
